Improv has been going very well. It seems like I've been doing it forever but we've only actually had 6 classes so far (there's been a few weeks off for holidays that have fallen on a monday). Monday night was my best class so far, where I actually thought I had the strongest performance/scenes of anyone there. I was really concentrating on adding detail and it worked, even when I was working with the one notoriously difficult person whose only contribution to our scene was basically "Honey, I can't hear you I'm in the shower". We were working briefly on a concept called "The Game" of the scene, which is when all your scenes involve around the inner city drug trade. No, wait, that's the Wire Season 1. It involves locating something odd that happens within the first few lines and then amplifying or varying that theme. That is one of the things I think I will excel at, because my mind is really good at pattern recognition (to the point of paranoia, sometimes!) and grafting arbitrary structures onto unrelated things. I think my scene was the only really successful development of a game that happened on Monday, when I turned a simple premise involving me and a buddy watching his sister undress into a lover's quarrell about monogamy in pervert-voyeur relationships. Aside from one or two people who just don't seem to internalize ANY of the rules and are just trying to be "funny", it's a great, ego-free group to work with, and I was actually sort of pleased and surprised when someone volunteered me to run the next practice session we were doing. It probably has more to do with the fact that I am willing to assert a point of view and end the petty arguments that happened last time over what exercises we should do, but in a friendly, no bullshit way, than it has to do with respect for my "talent", but still, that's a nice vote of confident. I could always direct :)
