during which the exotic suddenly appears

My mother's parents, and her three sisters, could be racist. I hesitate to say they are racist, because they haven't seen my sister's fiance yet. But two or three examples will do:

1) So her older sister from Louisiana is pretty much "converted" to that hard-line Southern idee-fixe: that the South was justified in seceding from the Union. While we were in Tennessee over the summer, the subject came

Denying myself the pleasure of these late Winter-early Spring days is itself a pleasure to me. "What about the homeless people, Dave?" My suffering is more than bearable because of all this excess warmth laying around. I'll have to just pedal my bicycle faster, I guess.

I'm arguing with some kids in a Sakai chat-room (as a homework assignment) about rap. I sa

"If I did not know"

http://fingersweep.livejournal.com/96914.html

Life's mission goes on until it is fulfilled. Sometimes I say to myself: "I can't die yet, because I haven't read all of Shakespeare; I haven't learned the bagpipes (haha); I haven't written any memoirs; I haven't married or demolished my computer; I don't know what I believe." I'm constantly making plans, in good faith. I can't die immaturely.

On the other hand, I forget that life is my mound of preparat

The last and first time I listened to this Bach Cantata was Valentine's Day '07, while it was snowing. Perhaps I remember it so well because it's also one of the most beautiful (and obviously because whatever happens every holiday is seared into the memory).

a musical concert

http://fingersweep.livejournal.com/96159.html

The Rutgers Symphony Orchestra was performing Ravel and Stravinsky tonight at the Nicholas Music Center, and I, because free, ignorant, and unhappy, went to cheer myself up. Free as in the concert was and because I was unoccupied; and ignorant as in I'd never been to a classical concert at Rutgers and had never heard Ravel, & Stravinsky only in passing.

The first piece was Ravel's La Valse.

Metamorphoses 1.268-269

This is Ovid's South Wind wringing the Deluge out of the Clouds. You can feel Spring even in the snowfall tonight, damp and heavy.

The Modern Poetry professor talked about his early life in Southern California, near the mountain ranges around Los Angeles. That he hadn't

Winter

http://fingersweep.livejournal.com/95531.html

This Winter, which I will not remember, was only a prelude to Spring. It will snow perhaps once more before Spring comes finally, unambiguously. When I was little, seeing the patches of grass poking up through the snow was like spying on a naked woman. How sad! We must wake up, now. Spring is a new morning, but Winter is the dream.

dreams

http://fingersweep.livejournal.com/95245.html

We were sitting around a table, oval, playing a game. My partner was a forty-year old woman, withered, coughing. She went to bed before we answered our first question. I asked my dad (turn before ours), "When the Ohio overwhelmed its banks, did it flood?" It was a history question. "Yes," he wrote on loose-leaf. "Yep."

Feel better this morning, just groggy, a runny nose, what else? Not much else. Oh yeah,

from the basement to the pool

http://fingersweep.livejournal.com/95035.html

Last night, while this nasal drip, this cold, was stewing somewhere in my throat, nose, sinuses, I had a dream about going to sleep at night. It's odd, this past month I've had at least three dreams about dreaming, one in which I shared a dream with another and the shared dream was later substantialized (something about a graveyard). I woke up half-convinced I should receive an email from that person who was in my dr
