Crummy football weekend

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/4006.html

This football season has gotten off to a lousy start for me.  The Hurricanes got pasted by Louisville, 31-7, and the Dolphins lost to the lowly Bills, 16-6.

First, the Hurricanes.  This loss effectively eliminated them from national championship contention, and frankly, they don't look like they're anywhere near being the best team in the country.  Sure, the Canes can still run the table fro

You will always be Pluto to me

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/3782.html

As if it wasn't bad enough that Pluto was kicked out of the planetary family, it was stripped of its name.  The former planet is now classified as an asteroid and given the unremarkable name 134340.

Wow, what a bummer.  Isn't Ceres an asteroid, and doesn't it have a name?  It's hard to imagine the name Pluto removed from new textbooks ent

Wikipedia is great

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/3544.html

For whatever reason, I was thinking about the old TV series "Land of the Lost".  So I Googled "Land of the Lost".  The first two results weren't that great, but the third pointed to the Wikipedia entry.  After reading about "Land of the Lost", I then went to the link for "Sid and Marty Krofft".  Talk about taking

Happy 40th, Star Trek!

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/2458.html

40 years ago today, the original "Star Trek" series graced television sets around the country.  Can you believe it?  40 years!  That's older than me!  :-)

The original series remains my favorite, with TNG a close second.  I admit the production values, acting, etc. in TNG were better than TOS, but having seen TOS and its subsequent movies more often, I'm more attached to the charac

Sanchez throws no-hitter

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/2119.html

Rookie Anibal Sanchez of my beloved Florida Marlins no-hit the Arizona Diamondbacks last night in a 2-0 victory!  It was the first no-hitter in the major leagues in 2 years, and the 19th no-hitter by a rookie pitcher in history.  OK, I admit I had no idea who he was until yesterday, but I have been following the anonymous Marlins' slow climb into the playoff race.  This season is beginning to feel like

Are you ready for some (college) football?

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/1476.html

Yes, the college football season returns this week!  The highlight of this weekend's matchups is the Labor Day (not technically a weekend since it's Monday) game between #11 FSU and #12 Miami.  Of course, the Miami Hurricanes are my favorite college team -- having grown up in Miami watching and rooting for the Canes -- so this game has more than a passing interest to me.

It's still too early for

I wish my commute was only 25.1 minutes

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/1075.html

According to Census Bureau, the average daily commute in 2005 was 25.1 minutes.  The longest commute time came from Vineland, New Jersey, at 39.6 minutes.  I wish I had even that commute time.  I live 27 miles from work, but I drive 50 minutes to an hour each way.

The sad thing is, hour-long commutes aren't uncommo

People are crazy

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/872.html

I don't know how much play this story is getting outside the Bay Area, but it's been big news here since it happened yesterday: a Fremont man, Omeed Aziz Popal, went on a driving rampage, killing one man and injuring at least 13 others.  The intersection mentioned in the article, Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road, is just down the street

The big move

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/677.html

The major event that's been occupying my life recently is that we're moving into a townhouse.  Yes, we decided to give up the cushy rental life to take on an oppressive mortgage.  Say what you will about the American dream of owning a home, but I'm still nervous about buying in a real estate bubble, especially when our new mortgage will cost twice as much as what we were paying in rent, and the townhouse is
