Askville -- why?

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/42388.html

I got an email from Amazon promoting their new site, Askville.  I found this odd because (1) Why does Amazon want to run a community Q&A site and (2) I thought Yahoo Answers was the de facto winner in the space, to the point of killing off

NYT joins the free crowd

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/41961.html

Earlier this month, when I posted about Business 2.0 folding, I commented that we'll see more paid subscription sites like the New York Times become free rather than having media sites copying NYT's paid model.  Today, I read that

Interview questions

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/41619.html

At TechInterview, there is, as expected, a list of technical interview questions.  Most of these are puzzles or brain teasers.  I've been asked to solve similar puzzles at most interviews I've been to, and coincidentally, I was asked the first question (The Rope Bridge) during the interview for my current position.  I can see why a technical interview would

Bye, Business 2.0

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/40749.html

A MarketWatch story reported that Business 2.0, a "monthly magazine about the new economy", will shut down after publication of the October issue.  This caught my eye because Business 2.0 is the only paid print periodical that I subscribe to.  (My few other print publications are tech-related freebies that I receive for working in the software industry.)  I

VideoHybrid

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/40516.html

I just learned about a new video site called VideoHybrid.  Instead of the stupid user-created videos you find on YouTube, VideoHybrid is full of movies and TV shows.  You can request a video and other users earn points for fulfilling that request.  I signed up and browsed through their selection of videos.  I don't see how this site is legal!  It's jus

Great idea or brain fart?

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/40057.html

I just had a thought.  Social networks are/were a big deal.  Virtual worlds are a big deal.  What if you combine the two and create a social network for virtual worlds?  Your virtual character could be friends with other virtual characters!  When you're in Second Life, your character could look at the friends pages of his/her Second Life friends.  Even better, they could look at the page

URLopia

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/39750.html

File this under the shameless promotion category.  About a month and a half ago, I helped out a friend build a site called URLopia.  He wanted to learn the Struts framework and this was a simple enough app for it.  In it's current state, it's a one-page site that's a clone of Tinyurl (except that you can select your own shortcut).  We had in mind a grander boo

Frak! Frak! Frak!

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/38460.html

I knew it would happen, but no amount of mental preparation can stop me from feeling really p*ed off that Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's HR record!  And on top of it, Bonds had the gall to say outright, "This record is not tainted at all."  Umm, did he forget testifying in front of a grand jury that he took performance enhancing drugs?  Or that his trainer is in jail because of steroids distribution

Bonds ties Aaron; I feel sick

http://hsu06.livejournal.com/38363.html

Last night, Barry "The Cheater Who Took Steroids" Bonds tied Hank Aaron's record for most career home runs.  This is arguably the most cherished record in baseball and perhaps all sports, and it sickens me that it will soon be owned by a jerk who cheated to gain the record.  Living in the Bay Area, it's often an uphill battle arguing with my friends here about whether Bonds deserves the record should he hit
