The liver is... ummm, very widespread in functionality. It makes the stuff that stores glucose and breaks it, synthesizes proteins, converts ammonia to urea, and breaks a ton of other poisons up too. Also, the key function is regeneration of other tissues, or at least making the stuff that can.
