Smothered, covered, rapt

http://ormondsacker.livejournal.com/38014.html

I forget exactly how I got into conversation with the fry cook at the Southside Waffle House this evening - I think the waitress who had taken my order was in the bathroom and he was checking up on some fine point. He saw my book.

"'Those Damned Rebels'. Is that Civil War?"
"Revolutionary" I said, pushing it over the counter at him.
"'The American Revolution Through British Eyes'. Huh. That s

The new girl: "Jesus!! Oh! Ha ha, you snuck up on me! Ahh, ... listen, though, could you maybe not do, that? ... cause, y'know, it's me, I freak out, it's like, I've been taking tae kwon do for five years and you know what that does to you - nowadays someone sneaks up behind me I'm all elbow to the throat and sweep the legs, y'know - it's me, I'm weird.

life in okc, music

That Oklahoma City film festival, whatever the crap it's called, is going down this weekend. I was glancing over a list of screenings in idle confirmation of not going, when I noticed the tentpole film was by my ex-barber's best friend's brother the documentarian, who has won some stuff in the past for the documentary-making. (Alternatively, you may know him as the

Uwe Boll confounds us all

http://ormondsacker.livejournal.com/37299.html

nerrd!

SFX had a brief interview with pugnacious director Uwe Boll, in which they mostly stuck to his favorite books and sci-fi influences and other mollifying subjects. At the end, when he was in a concilliatory mood, they brought up the notorious crappiness of his films.
"Look, here's all you need to know about critics. On imdb right now, my Bloodrayne has two and a half stars out of ten. Meanwhile, Ultr

Priceless historical artifact dept: The following sheet of paper was found by an estate-sale appraiser in Mersey, England, tucked inside a laserdisc of "Lisztomania". Liverpool-based music critic and pop historian Tom Melly calls it "a stunning window into the Beatles' late-period creative process, ca. Abbey Road."

Back from Kansas City. Was at various points caught up by defeatist used-booksellers ("They're closed now, closed, had to move, got some of their stock in back, closed"), sneaker-and-chinoed film marketers (c.f. out of town, nerrd!, me

He jittered the cursor around the screen aimlessly.
"'Somewhat dislike', right there, fifth column," I said, indicating.
"Right, right," he said, clicking. He turned a page in his script. "Okay, what do you think of the following actors actresses: Sienna Miller, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer..."
"Indifferent, a favorite, like, like..." I listed, trying to see around his shoulder. That list of n

Webcomics Week Day 6: Diary Comics

http://ormondsacker.livejournal.com/36141.html

Once a man named Harvey Pekar decided to write a comic book about himself, and he wrote it, and he saw that it was good. And he handled distribution, and he sweated and strained and leveraged his well-placed friends and feuded with David Letterman and grew old and stayed choleric and was eventually played by Paul Giamatti in quite a good movie. Thirty-five years later, the patron saint of comic autobiography and as

Unnoticed in the background, According to Jim came on. Now, understand, the bar's on the far side of the room, the sound is off, I have a book... it's some time before I noticed anything amiss. In fact, by the time I happened to glance up at the TV, the opening credits were nearly over. All I caught was "And Courtney Thorne-Smith as Cheryl" (brief clip of same, arms folded, rolling her eyes).
