teh awful

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/35224.html

Saw a flyer up by the elevators yesterday:

"Make $500 for one minute's work! 'Average' math student needs signed letters of recommendation for graduate school. Already written, just need signature. Must have Tenure."

Where do I begin? There were actually some of the tabs with the contact email removed. It wasn't there today- I don't know if they got their signatures or if they got wise.

Dog envy

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/34901.html

I saw the most beautiful dogs at Lowe's yesterday- Two brothers, both Great Dane/Bull Mastiff mixes, each about 200 pounds, and 36" at the shoulder. Perfectly behaved- they were being walked by a woman who couldnt have weighed more than 120 herself. It's too bad we didn't have Thursday with us- it would have been cool to see how she reacts to lager dogs than her, since she is doing _so well_ with the foster puppies.

Either way

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/34721.html

Heard a tagline for the movie "American Gangster" last night:

"A story as inspiring as it is true."

That could really go either way, couldn't it?

Painting

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/34268.html

Painted the house this weekend. We started with rollers, putting on the primer coat, and quickly realized that that was going to take forever. So we went out and rented a sprayer. I think we did a pretty good job considering I'd never used one before (Minta had). The house is now light blue, and it looks sooooooo much better. We still have to do the trim and the doors, but the workweek beckons, and it's raining (we f

weekend stuff

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/33886.html

Things I did this weekend:

  • Cracked all but a few of the last of the 2006 Pecan crop.
  • Harvested about 20 lbs of pecans, and husked them (Minta helped)
  • Opened a stock trading account, researched stocks.
  • Finished bleaching the exterior of the house for paint prep. Die, mildew, die!
  • Emptied Sink of dishes
  • Mopped floors in den and kitchen.
  • Wat

This morning, While walking the 4 blocks from where I parked to my building, I saw two three-legged dogs. Quite a coincidence, i think.

The New X Prize has been announced, funded by Google. $25 million to the first team to put an autonomous rover on the moon. No problem. ;-)

Handyman

http://peribothron.livejournal.com/32937.html

The house came with 5 old Casablanca ceiling fans- they are great, and would each cost about $1K new. They all have variable speed control, with a rheostat on the fan itself, which is a bit of a pain. Apparently, this design is not so great electronically. We found this out two years ago, when the one in our bedroom fried its printed circuit board in the middle of the night, and we awoke to acrid electronics smoke. W
