american idol stole my brain
It's official: the '80s are magic for American Idol, and this year's girls, though competent across the board, are infinitely less interesting than the boys.
The one exception.
Brooke White. Had the sense to change up the arrangement on "Love is a Battlefield" to suit her folky style, and it worked. That's never been my favorite Pat Benatar song, to the point t

american idol stole my brain
Up until this week, my favorite theme night in the three years that I've been watching American Idol was in season five when the top eleven took on the 1950s. Barry Manilow was an amazing guest mentor (no, really), and with the group of contestants they had that season, almost everyone found a song that was a perfect fit.
The '80s worked with same magic for the top eight boys this week, even

There are new albums available on iTunes from the Ditty Bops, Kaki King, and Kathleen Edwards. The Ditty Bops release is dated February 1, and I have no idea how I missed it, but there it is. The other two are new this week. Meanwhile, they've put a bunch of "indie classics" on sale for $7.99, and though I already have most of the ones I want, I would like to get Portishead's Dummy and Pave

american idol stole my brain
The funny thing about American Idol is that even with The Most Talented Group of Contestants Ever !!!, they're still capable of awfully boring performances when they make the wrong song choices. The top ten girls were remarkably uninteresting tonight, considering that most of them are actually pretty excellent singers.
There was, of course, one exception.
Brooke White.

american idol stole my brain
Another week of the theme sucking more than the contestants on American Idol. I wouldn't say anyone really rocked the house this week, but again, they seem to have assembled a collection of not-terrible male singers. It's like they're going for musical credibility or something, this season. Although, after six years? A little late for that.
Still my favorite.

I could give you the whole story of why I'm limping and I had to borrow a cane from M's 83-year-old grandmother, but it comes down to the same thing as usual: I'm an idiot, and as a result, I fell down and hurt myself. On the plus side, the sore ankle is distracting me somewhat from the fact that I just keep getting sicker and sicker with no end in sight. And all the damn snow w

I have the same illness as everyone else. Luckily, I was off yesterday, so I spent the whole day alternately sleeping and reading and watching Hard Candy on DVD. (Ellen Page, ladies and gentlemen.) I had a dream that my workplace burned down because a bunch of us were sleeping over and someone left an alarm clock plugged in, so I was hanging out across the street at Anderson Cooper's house,

american idol stole my brain
Okay, I'm on board with this "most talented group of American Idol contestants ever" thing for real, because none of the girls fully sucked either, despite the fact that half of them were apparently dying of the plague or something this week.
Love.
Brooke White. Brooke is sunshine and rainbows, but not in the obnoxious way that you think. She's no

american idol stole my brain
This whole season of American Idol, they've been repeating the phrase "Most talented group of contestants ever!", and I figured it was one of those things where they were hoping that if they kept saying it so much, that would make it true. But after watching the top twelve guys last night, man, I don't know. The performances weren't all spectacular, but I didn't find that I could really hate any

As you may have gathered, a brain like mine can only resist major pop culture sensations for so long before I have to at least start sampling them. Here is where I currently stand on several key items:
Lily Allen: Yes, okay, I'm in. (Emily's going, "Congratulations, welcome to 2006.") Though I must say I'm intrigued by this "clean" version of the album that appears
