An army of mutant bluebottles has hatched out in my cottage in the last three days. They've all got one wing sticking out at a right-angle and the other one flush to the body. None of them can actually fly; they just crawl lethargically around the floor. It's disgusting. I'm worried there might be an unhygienic explanation (i.e, likelihood of dead rat somewhere in house? or worse?). Being no scientist, I have no way

This message was just posted on the Brighton "Freecycle" notice board, which lets nice green-minded people offer up things they no longer want, for free re-cycling. WANTED: to borrow, recording of last night's Holiday Showdown. Did anyone record it? This is the description: Reality series in which two families who have never met spend two weeks together on each other's favourite holidays. The conservative Richa

And another thing. This morning on the Today programme, the Foreign Secretary said: 'Afghanistan is not Hampshire or Surrey'. I'm still trying to fathom the meaning of this.

Today, in conversation with someone who was trying to persuade me to apply for a big project that I don't want to apply for because I'm so knackered, I found myself explaining that I'd rather be a big fish in a small pond than a small pond in a big fish. Now, on getting home, I realise that I'd quite like to experience being that small pond. It works better for me than the fishy thing. Perhaps on the subconscious str

I think about lj every day, I log on every week, I write an entry every fortnight at the moment. That's because... I hate work. They've got me teaching four new courses, 100 new students this term alone, each one requiring one-to-one supervision; and lots of shitty committees with boring farts rambling on for hours, filled with their own self-importance. Tossers. Anyway, in amongst all this I'm thinking pos

For reasons that I'd better not explain (um, that sounds a lot dodgier than it is), an academic friend of mine keeps sending me pamphlets from Ghana with a distinct pornographic content. Today's arrival was called, 'I'm a Virgin, Treat Me Gently'. The week before was a pamphlet called 'Top Secret', and it contained a lot of images of dangerously enhanced western females, so incredibly enhanced on the top half that, i

I'm having to work today, pah, writing presentations. Resentful yawn. And my house stinks of mackerel which I fried two days ago. Its smell has permeated everything. The strongest air freshener won't get rid of it. There's a really powerful bad pong in the air, but at least its keeping me awake.

Celebrity BB is so creepy this year. Urgh. They're all complete tossers, but having said that, as usual these celebs are compelling and repulsive at the same time. Why the hell did George Galloway agree to go on it?

About six weeks ago, my troublesome and ever-so-confrontational mother slammed the phone down on me with the following final words, said in the coldest possible voice: 'I'm delighted to be rid of you'. In the olden days that would have read, 'I hereby disinherit you from my will, scum-bag daughter of mine'; or 'do not darken my doorstep again, scumbag etc'. Well, that six-week-ago call marked the end of twelve months

Oh, I hate Christmas so much! Words fail to express it. And the icing on the Xmas-cake every year is the 'Christmas letter' I get from an acquaintance in Cambridge. The fact that she's a born-again Christian of the proselytising type, and the fact that she once spent an entire 3-year period trying to make me go to church under a variety of pretexts, is the least of my worries when this annual missive ar
